SK Hynix shares sensitive data with research institute in real time

SK Hynix decided to share technical data with external organisation for the first time in history to enhance competitiveness. The partner to share data with is  Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Both sides will jointly work to develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to improve semiconductor performance.

On the 12th May, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Artificial Intelligence Strategic Cooperation with Vice-Chancellor Park Hyun-wook of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Song Hyon-rok of SK Hynix Data Conversion (DT) unit.

The main point of cooperation is that SK Hynix provides data generated in the semiconductor manufacturing process to the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in a cloud. It marks the first case in Korea that semiconductor production site data is shared with external research institute in real time. SK Hynix expects that the performance of semiconductors will improve with the AI ‚Äč‚Äčalgorithm developed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. SK Hynix built an artificial intelligence cooperation cloud system in Icheon headquarters in March. In order to provide easy access to data for the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, a separate security space has been prepared at the Daejeon Campus and the next-generation ICT research center in Seongnam-KAIST.

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology expects to develop talents while developing AI algorithms with SK Hynix semiconductor data.

Jae-gyun Moon, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, said, “This collaboration is the first example when the academic institute can access data of a semiconductor company where security is vital in real time.”
