Samsung SDI and batteries for foldable phones

Samsung SDI receives initial supply of batteries for Galaxy Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip 5G, which are expected to be released next month by Samsung Electronics. This is the second after Galaxy Fold 1 and Galaxy Z Flip.

According to the industry on the 30th, Samsung SDI is solely responsible for the battery cells to be installed in the Galaxy Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip 5G. The battery cells are made in Tianjin, China, and the module and pack work, including the battery protection circuit, is being carried out in a Vietnamese factory. Galaxy Fold 2 uses 2275mAh and 2090mAh capacity products. For Galaxy Z Flip 5G, a 2500mAh, 704mAh capacity battery is applied. There is no big difference compared to the previous work.

Recently, Samsung SDI gave some of its initial battery cells to competitors such as LG Chem in flagship smartphones such as the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S20, which were released last year. For mid-to-low-priced models such as the Galaxy A and M series, CATL, BYD, etc. took over. However, some products are still supplied with batteries mainly by Samsung SDI. This includes strategic products from major regions, including expensive foldable phones.

The same goes for Galaxy Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip 5G. There is no need to make expensive molds again because there are no major changes in existing designs. It is for this reason that the battery capacity is not much different from the previous work. The battery is the most bulky part of the smartphone, except for the display. It is understood that the development time is shortened and cost reduction is also considered.

The small battery business plays the role of Samsung SDI cash cow. This includes small polymer batteries mainly used in smartphones, and cylindrical batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs), power tools, and wireless cleaners. Sales are larger for cylindrical batteries. In the case of small-sized polymer batteries, the business is focusing on profitability. Since last year, sales expansion has been focused mainly on low-end smartphones.

Samsung Electronics will release new mobile devices including Galaxy Fold 2 through online unpacking on the 5th of next month. It is expected that new wireless earphones such as Galaxy Buzz Live will also be introduced.
